Martin Margiela did not invent the Tabi shoes, just like he didn’t invent a lot of his most recognizable items. Belgian designer borrowed the idea of a split-toe shoes from the Japanese workers of the XV century. He first presented the model at his debut show back in 1988. Those shoes were worn by the very first model Martin Margiela sent out to the runway. Quite an iconic moment in the fashion history.
